Deck construction in The Far Wilds is a unique undertaking, requiring you to consider many factors. If you are used to building decks in MTG, you will find some similar concepts, but will also have to change the way you go about conceptualizing a deck.

== '''Baby, You’ve Lost that Magic Feeling''' ==

I’m starting with a comparison to Magic: The Gathering, because that’s where many of us started. Most CCG players have a background in MTG or similar, though you may have come to The Far Wilds by a different route. If you don’t know MTG, this section probably isn’t for you, so feel free to jump to the next.

Flux is comparable to mana, though there is a very important difference that directly impacts deck construction. In MTG, your mana base is directly related to the number of lands you have. Playing a land each turn gives you more mana this turn and every turn after. This means you can design based on a mana curve, with its peak at 2-3 mana cards and fewer 1 mana cost and even fewer high casting cost cards. However, in TFW your flux doesn’t reset every turn. It carries over from the previous turn. Not using flux this turn means having that flux available the next turn. Using flux this turn means it’s not there to use the next.

In addition to flux, you must also consider that cards have domain requirements to cast. You will have to design your deck knowing that you will have one domain the first turn and will probably need to have 7 flux to cast another domain card before you can start playing cards with a two domain casting cost. Your opponents can destroy your buildings, bringing you back down to one domain.

Remember that you get 2 flux per turn plus one flux for every well you control.

== '''Know the Requirements''' ==

Your deck must have a minimum of 40 cards. You can use no more than 3 of the same card in a deck, except for the basic buildings ([[Dwarven Hall]], [[Grove]], [[Graveyard]], [[Magma Chamber]]). You can have a max of 5 of each type of basic buildings.

If you are building a deck for the Expert Clash, you can only use cards you own or a default deck. You can’t mix and match the cards from the default deck. You can’t use phantom cards.

== '''Basic Guidelines''' ==

The following are general guidelines to use when designing a deck. There are always exceptions to the rules, such as players designing all building decks.

Make sure you understand how [[Autodraw]] works. It is vital to your deck construction methodology

Stick to the minimum of 40 cards. There are certain cards you probably want to have in your hand at different points in the game. For example, you may really like starting your Sylvan army with a [[Thistle Falcon]]. Sticking to 40 cards allows you to have the highest chance of drawing the cards you need.

Assuming 3 Thistle Falcons in a 40 card deck that includes at least one basic building, you will have one of those Falcons in your opening hand 40.3% of the time. If you 2 Falcons in your 40 card deck, you have s 28.7% chance of starting the game with one. 1 Falcon in a 40 card deck gives you 15.3% chance. In a 45 card deck, you have a 36.3% chance of drawing a Falcon if you have 3 of them, a 25.6% chance if you have 2, and a 13.6% chance if you have 1.

Create a one to two domain deck. It’s possible to create a 3 or more domain deck, but not recommended for beginner deck builders.

Aim for about 15-20 creatures and 10-15 buildings with at least 5 sources of domain. Remember, your opponent will probably take out at least 2 or 3 of your domain sources over the span of the game, and you want to still be able to cast your cards. Plan your domain sources around how many single and multiple domain cards you have.

You will have to consider flux cost and domain cost when curving out your deck. As a general rule, try to keep the cards you plan on casting early game to an average of 3 flux and 1 domain. As the game progresses, you should control two wells and have more domain sources, so your mid to late game cards should have an average cost of 4 flux and 2 or less domain. Use 3 domain and 6 flux cards sparingly. This guideline can be bent with flux accelerators such as [[Ord Stone]], [[Gather Spirits]], the [[Nether Plasma]]\[[Altar of Ix]] combo. Domain accelerators include [[Hadarck's Throne]], [[Fairy Emissary]], [[Astridian Diplomat]], and [[Glimpse of Greatness]].

Plan your domain and flux cost with precision. You know you want to have early plays of 1 domain and 3 or less flux. You probably want to play a creature first turn. If you have 10 one domain creatures with 3 or less flux cost in your 40 card deck, you will draw at least one of them in your opening hand 85.4% of the time.

== '''What's the deal with all this math?''' ==

Math isn't for everyone. The percentages that I talked about above should give you a basic idea of where theses recommendations have come from. However, if you are the kind of person that likes to toy with numbers, see what happens with a larger deck, etc, here is the math I used to figure out the above. If you have any questions on it, feel free to message me (Keyser)

To figure out the odds of drawing a particular card in your first hand, use this formula:

1 - [(D-1-X)!(D-7)!] / [(D-1)!(D-7-X)!]

where D is the number cards in your deck and X is the number of possible cards you are hoping to draw at least one of in your starting hand. For example, if you have 10 1 domain cards that you want to find the odds of drawing that first hand in a deck of 40 cards, you calculate 1 - (29! * 23!)/(39! * 23!).

== '''If you build it, he will come''' ==

The desire to build whispers to you, and you must heed it's call. Keep a solid focus in your deck build. Have an idea of what it is that you want to accomplish and design your deck around that. Don't try to accomplish every goal in one deck.

Give your new deck a bit of time. Try it out a several times before you start making changes to it. It takes time for player and deck to merge into a symbiotic relationship. You need to have time to learn the ins and outs of the deck, learn its good draws and bad draws, and see which cards are helpful and which ones aren't. A couple losses does not a failed deck mean.

Don't get discouraged if your first few tries crash and burn. Remember how many tries it took the Wright brothers to get their plane in the air.

== '''Yeah, yeah, got it... now what?''' ==

UBER has been working on a concept called [[Flux_Counting]]. It should help you on your journey to becoming an advanced deck builder.

In a Battle Draft all the cards are shared between both players.
You each see the same hand of 14 cards. The deck is 6 packs from 2 random domains (3 packs from each), but it's possible to get same domain twice.
* When one person plays a card it is gone for both players.
* Whenever there are less than 14 cards in shared hand players draw as much as they need to get 14 (if there are cards left in shared deck).
* At the start of round oldest card from hand is cycled.
* Players can not cycle cards except case below.
* Player that act second can cycle one card before his first action. This is added to balance advantage of acting first.

Battle Drafting requires a different strategy than most other formats. You have a much better idea of what the enemy is capable of and must constantly work to spoil his plans. Often you must play cards just to prevent the enemy from using them.

Currently it costs 40 gold (or 4 [[Power]]) to enter and the winner gets 76 gold in Battle Draft or 11 gold to enter and the winner gets gets 20g in Poor Battle Draft.

== What is Gold? ==

Gold is currency in The Far Wilds. You can purchase Gold from the Market Section, using Amazon payments, that accept all major credit cards. With gold you can buy cards on the market, buy Starter Packs in the Market Section or use it to enter the various [[Tournaments]] that The Far Wilds has to offer. (Some Tournaments are totally free to play.)

== How do I get an Avatar/Profile Picture? ==

Go to 'Options' in the top right corner of the interface. There is a drop down menu next to 'Avatar' where you will be able to select your desired picture.

== What is a Default card? ==

When you register an account, you are given three different pre-made armies from three different domains ([[Default DarkLegion]], [[Default MountainFolk]] and [[Default Sylvan]]), together with five Basic Buildings from all domains, including the other three currently existing domains (Elemental, Celestial Imperium and Horde of Chaos). Default cards, unlike [[Phantom]] cards and cards that you have bought, can’t be sold or traded. You can tell that a card is a Default Card by the fact that it is greyed out and has no expiry date. The exception to this rule is Default buildings which have their normal colour.

Except for these differences, Default cards work in much the same way as other cards. Hence, you can include any variety of them in your decks (given that they adhere to the normal deck rules for each format), including the deck with which you enter the [[Expert Clash]].

== Why are some of the cards in my army are grey? / What is a Phantom card? ==

A [[Phantom]] card is a card that it is greyed out and can’t be traded or sold. It has an expiry date. When you receive a Phantom card, you will have it for X number of days, after which it is deleted from your army. You can acquire Phantom cards by playing on the weekly [[Ladder]] or by playing the computer (SarsAI). After each win you acquire one Phantom card and if you are fortunate enough to be ranked at the top of the Ladder before it resets, you acquire 60 Phantom cards.

You can include any variety of Phantom cards in your decks (given that they adhere to the normal deck rules for each format), including the deck with which you enter the [[Expert Clash]].

== Is this game really free to play? ==

It is possible to create entire decks from just phantoms. If you don't have that kind of time, so using money to buy gold is a way to get permanent cards you can build a solid deck around.

You can play regular free tournaments with gold prizes, but winning gold this way is relatively slow.

Also you can play [[Tournaments]] formats for free such as Draft or Sealed and you don't need to own any cards for this.

== Why are there no Elemental, Celestial Imperium, and Chaos Default Armies? ==

Mainly due to two factors:

* No one has designed such a deck yet.
* It would affect the market values of the cards used to build those default decks.

== What is the difference between the on-line version and the download version? ==

Mainly better graphics and smarter computer. Also it is slightly faster and doesn't require to download images unlike browser version, that download card image whenever you see one.

== What's a Ladder Rank? ==
A ladder rank is a weekly rank (separate from your in-game rank) that resets on certain days. You can increase your ladder rank by playing in Similar Player matches, and battling Similar Players (Players whose names are green) in Anyone Matches. Your ladder rank is always displayed on the top right corner of the screen along with your gold. You can click on you ladder rank (leftmost number) to display the top ranking ladder players. If your name is on the list, you will get a few phantom cards when the ladder rank resets.

== Why are some of the names in the lobby green/red? ==

Red indicates a player currently in a game. As a result, you can't challenge them.

Green indicates a player that has a similar rank, and therefore if you battle this person in a similar player or another player battle, it affects your ladder rank.

== Do I HAVE to limit my deck to 40 cards? ==
No, but it's for your own good. Bigger deck sizes are harder to process in tournaments and slow the creation process down. Also bigger decks mean smaller chances to draw cards you may need in certain situations.

However, if you're still new to deck creating, don't be too afraid to bypass the limit. It may help you discover a playing style you like.

== My card just did something it didn't say it would. What should I do? ==

Report it in the Bug Thread in the forum. There a lot of friendly players there that will help you out in a few days with responses.

== Why is the AI so easy? ==

Check to make sure your AI is on normal difficulty. Otherwise, it's good to practice on where there are no battle-willing players.

== I want to change/set my email address for password recovery. What should I do? ==

<!--
== What are Acorns? ==

Acorns are no longer won in [[Tournaments]]. The [[Expert Clash]] used to give a 400 Acorn prize pool after power was removed. You earn Acorns at a certain rate per hour if you have less than 500 Acorns. Acorns are used to build your [[Kingdom]]. Kingdoms are no longer in the game at the moment. They were removed to focus on better aspects of the game.

== What is my Kingdom? ==

Your kingdom is a sub-game of TFW funded by [[Acorns]]. You begin your kingdom by typing /king in the lobby. Find out more by visiting the [[Kingdom]] entry.

== What's a Ladder Rank? ==

Visit this page and use your login/password used in game: http://www.thefarwilds.com/forum/ucp.php?i=profile&mode=reg_details

There you can set email.

Keep in mind that you not provided email during registration and lost your password there might be problematic to recover your account (contact Altren in game or mail to altren@thfarwilds.com).

==

<!--
== What are Acorns? ==

== What is Gold? ==

== How do I get an Avatar/Profile Picture? ==

Go to 'Options' in the top right corner of the interface. There is a drop down menu next to 'Avatar' where you will be able to select your desired picture.

== What is a Default card? ==

 Sealed Deck

Sealed is about scraping together the best deck from limited resources. You must make do with not the most powerful cards but know that your enemies are also constrained.

In Sealed Tournaments each player is given some amount of packs from which to build their army:
* Free Sealed: 5 packs from the [[Seed Set]];
* Zwar Gokken: 6 packs from all Sets, but one randomly selected fro each player domain is excluded;
* Domain Keep Cards: 3 packs from all sets with cards of selected domain and unaligned cards.

Each player will end up with different cards. You then have a 10 minutes to build an army from these cards. Your army must be at least 25 cards and can contain any cards that you got in your packs (could more than 3x of any card). Once each player has submitted their army the play proceeds like a Constructed Deck tournament.

Again these can be either single or double elimination.

The prize payout is the same as Constructed Deck. In Domain Keep Cards you also keep cards you got.
FAQ

Altren:

== What is Gold? ==

There are two types of currencies in The Far Wilds. One is Gold, the other is [[Power]].

== How do I get an Avatar/Profile Picture? ==

Go to 'Options' in the top right corner of the interface. There is a drop down menu next to 'Avatar' where you will be able to select your desired picture.

== What is a Default card? ==

== What's a Ladder Rank? ==
There are two types of currencies in The Far Wilds. One is Gold, the other is [[Power]].

== What is Power? ==

Unlike Gold, you can't buy Power with "real" money. It used to be something you gained if you were doing well in various [[Tournaments]]. For instance, you would get 4 Power if you won an [[Expert Clash]], 2 if you were the runner up and 1 if you were third. You can enter Tournaments using Power and you can also sell it in exchange for Gold on the market. There is currently no way to win more power.

== What is a Default card? ==

== What's a Ladder Rank? ==
Your ladder rank is always displayed on the top right corner of the screen along with your gold. You can click on you ladder rank (leftmost number) to display the top ranking ladder players.
You can play ladder games just by pressing Similar Player and waiting for someone else do that as well.

If you win you will earn ladder points. If you lose you will lose some ladder points. You get more points for beating higher ranked people. You lose less points the higher the enemy is rated. So it isn't so bad to lose to someone of a higher rating than you but if you manage to beat them you get a lot of points.

The people with the highest ladder points at the end of the week will win phantoms and the points will be reset for the next week.

All ladder games are against people of a similar skill level so really anyone can win the weekly phantoms.

You must be within 100 points constructed rating of someone for the ladder game to count.
If you beat someone of higher rating than you you will gain more ladder points than if you beat someone of a lower rating than you.
If you lose to someone of lower rating than you you will lose more ladder points than if you lose to someone of higher rating.
Each game you play with the same person in the same week counts for fewer ladder points.

Ladder scores is calculated with the following formula:
(250 + (LoserRating-WinnerRating))/2^(number_of_games_played_with_same_player)

So:
* ladder scores for winning and losing to the same player are different -- a player rated 50 points lower than you may win you 200 points or lose you 300 points (assuming it was the first match);
* each rematch against the same opponent will result in half as many points being won or lost.

* Players can not cycle cards.

The Far Wilds tries to make sure you are always able to increase your domain level. It does this by sometimes changing the next card you would draw. Autodraw works any time you draw a card (start of game, start of round, card draw as effect from played card).

1) When the game starts, any [[:Category:Basic|Basic building]] (any [[Grove]], [[Graveyard]], etc.) in your Army is added to a list of External Cards.

2) If you don't have a Base in play or in your hand, you will draw the first one available (closest to top of your Deck) from your Army if you have the domain to play it.

3) If you have a card in hand that you don't have the domain for and you don't have a card that gives you that domain in hand that you can play, you will draw the first available card from your Army that gives you that domain if you have one. If there isn't a card in your Army then you will draw one from your External Card list.

4) If you don't have a domain providing card in hand that you have the domain to play, you will draw the first domain providing card in your deck.

This means that if you start with one Grove in your Army and later it is destroyed. You will keep drawing Groves as long as you need them.

The Far Wilds turn system is a little different than most games.

The game is divided into Rounds. During a Round each player takes turns performing Actions.

An Action can be playing a card, moving a creature or a special ability of a building, creature or enchantment.

If you don't want to do an action or you are done with all your Actions hit "Pass" on the player status. This will pass your action. If all players pass their actions sequentially it will end the current Round.

When a Round is over, end of round actions are taken starting with the the oldest entity going to the newest. Start of round actions are taken from oldest to newest and all the entities undim unless specified otherwise, [[Flux]] is produced and 2 Glory points are assigned to the player that controls the most Flux Points. The player who was the first to pass in the previous round goes first in the new round.

The game continues until one player has at least 20 Glory at the start of the round and is not tied with other players. Getting 20 glory in the middle of round doesn't gives you a victory, you can win only at the start of round by having enough glory.

To speed up the game there is an option that allows you to prepare an action while it is the other players turn. This action doesn't happen immediately but waits until the other player acts before the action is sent.

= Deck =
A deck or army is set of [[Cards]] used in battle. Each player chooses their deck for battle before it begins. The decks are shuffled at the beginning of the battle.

=== Deck Limits ===
Each deck must have at least 40 cards in constructed formats or at least 25 cards in limited formats (see [[Ranking]] for format descriptions). Also there are different restrictions depending on format:
* in constructed format a deck can contain any card, but no more that three copies of each, except for [[:Category:Basic|Basic Buildings]], which can have up to five copies in deck;
* in limited games there are no limits on amount of copies of each card;
* some scripted games, like Highlander, may limit you to one of each card or impose other limits.

=== Hand and Draw ===
Each player have cards, available for casting. This cards are players hand.
At start of battle each player draws seven cards from his deck to create their initial hand. At the start of every [[Round]] players draw one more card if they have less than seven cards in hand. Basically, players draw cards from top of their decks with one exception, [[Autodraw]]. Autodraw may draw domain cards or bases from elsewhere instead.

=== Mulligan ===
At the start of a battle, before you do any actions, you may Mulligan your hand:
* all cards from your hand are shuffled into your deck;
* you draw a new hand with one less card than you had before (6 instead of 7, 5 instead of 6, etc.)

This is useful if you don't like your initial hand or want to start with specific card (or cards) in hand.

=== Cycle ===
Once every round a player may Cycle one card from his hand. Doing so moves that card to bottom the of their deck.

This is useful when you have seven or more cards in hand and want to draw a new card at start of the next round.

= Casting =
Players can play any card from his hand if he meet some requirements (see [[Cards]] page for cards properties description) :
* have enough [[Flux]]* to pay Flux Cost;
* have at least as much Domain Level* as the card; to get Domain level you need to play cards that give domain first;
* other requirements:
** Figure (Building or Creature) can be played only in unoccupied spaces;
** most Creatures must be played near Base;
** Spells and Enchantments (and also some Buildings or Creatures) have their target requirements in card description.
''*''You can see your flux amount and Domain Level in [[Player_Status]].

=== Targets ===
By default you can target only spaces and [[Entity|Entities]] on spaces that you can see (by Creatures, Buildings or something else).
If card's text says '''Any''' space this mean that you don't need to see target space (for example [[Teleport]] can move Creature to unrevealed spaces).

==== Creatures spawn points ====
By default Creatures can only be played adjacent to your Base on a land space if there's nothing in its text box that specifies otherwise (for example [[Treeherd]] says "Spawn in forest"):
* Creatures with [[Swims]] or [[Aloft]] may spawn on land or ocean
* Creatures that specify a spawn location can be placed away from your Base (for example [[Treeherd]] or [[Lightning Elemental]]). You can place creature in any revealed space that fits into valid spawn space described in card. You can't place creature in enemy controlled territory even if that space is valid target otherwise.

=== Result of casting ===
If you play card and nothing prevents it (for example [[Null Stone]] or [[Dew Mogi]]) card is played.
* You lose flux amount equal to Flux Cost of card.
* You lose the played card from hand.
* Turn goes to your opponent.
*Other results depends on card type:
** Creature: Dimmed Creature is placed on map;
** Building: If placed in your area of control the Building is placed on map dimmed , otherwise a [[Construction Site]] of that building is placed on map;
** Enchantment: Dimmed enchantment is attached to Entity, placed on Space or placed on World (depends on Enchantment type);
** Spell: Spell effect is resolved.

If something prevents you from playing the card, you will see message in the battle log and can do another action.

If your card was cancelled:
* You lose flux amount equal to Flux Cost of card.
* You lose played card from hand.
However it will still be your turn.

== What is Gold? ==

There are two types of currencies in The Far Wilds. One is Gold, the other is [[Power]].

== What is Power? ==

== How do I get an Avatar/Profile Picture? ==

Go to 'Options' in the top right corner of the interface. There is a drop down menu next to 'Avatar' where you will be able to select your desired picture.

== What is a Default card? ==

== What is a Phantom card? ==

== What's a Ladder Rank? ==

<!--
== What are Acorns? ==

== What is Gold? ==

There are two types of currencies in The Far Wilds. One is Gold, the other is [[Power]].

== What is Power? ==

Unlike Gold, you can't buy Power with "real" money. It used to be something you gained if you were doing well in various [[Tournaments]]. For instance, you would get 4 Power if you won an [[Expert_Clash]], 2 if you were the runner up and 1 if you were third. You can enter Tournaments using Power and you can also sell it in exchange for Gold on the market. There is currently no way to win more power.
Default cards, unlike [[Phantom]] cards and cards that you have bought, can’t be sold or traded. You can tell that a card is a Default Card by the fact that it is greyed out and has no expiry date.
